International Driving Permit in Thailand β Do You Need One?
Guide to international driving permits in Thailand. Whether you need one, how to get one, and why a Thai driving licence is better long-term. This guide is based on daily hands-on experience from the Nan Services Pattaya team β serving expats across Pattaya, Jomtien, Naklua, Rayong and the entire Eastern Seaboard.
What Is an International Driving Permit?
An IDP translates your home country licence into multiple languages for use in countries recognising the 1949 or 1968 Geneva Conventions. Thailand recognises IDPs. Must be carried with your original national licence.

IDP vs Thai Driving Licence
For short-term visitors an IDP is sufficient. For long-term Pattaya residents a Thai driving licence is strongly recommended β renewable locally and required by Thai insurers for full coverage.
