Thai Motorbike Licence

Riding a motorbike or scooter without a valid Thai motorcycle licence is illegal and will void your insurance if you have an accident. Many expats don't realise their car licence does not cover motorbikes in Thailand.

We arrange your motorcycle licence application at the Pattaya DLT office. If you already have a foreign motorbike licence, we can convert it directly. If you don't, a theory test and a short practical manoeuvre test is required.

Driving Licence FAQ

Do I need to sit a driving test to get a Thai licence?
If you're converting a valid foreign driving licence, no practical driving test is required. You will need to pass a short multiple-choice theory test (available in English) and complete the eyesight and reaction checks at the DLT office. New applicants without a prior licence will need to take the practical test as well.
Can I ride a motorbike on my car driving licence?
No. In Thailand, car and motorcycle licences are completely separate categories. You must hold a valid Thai motorcycle licence to ride any bike over 50cc. Riding without the correct licence is illegal and will invalidate your insurance policy if you are involved in an accident.
My licence has expired — can I still renew it?
Yes, but only within one year of expiry. If your Thai licence has been expired for more than one year, you will need to restart the process from a 1-year licence. This is one of the main reasons we set up renewal reminders for all our clients.
What's the difference between a 2-year and 5-year licence renewal?
The 2-year renewal is straightforward — a medical certificate, the usual checks at DLT, and your licence is renewed. The 5-year renewal additionally requires you to watch a 4-hour safety video course at the DLT office (usually split into two 2-hour sessions). Nan Services attends with you and makes the day as smooth as possible.
